Tab 1:

Above is a T-chart with 8 characteristics of Chris McCandless. Look through Part I of "Death of an Innocent" to find the places in the text where these characteristics are directly stated. Write the quote down opposite the characteristic and mark the page number, as shown in the example. The wording will be the exact same or close in the desired quotes.

Tab 2:

Above is a T-chart listing quotes from "Death of an Innocent." Read each quote and determine what characteristic of McCandless is being implied (hinted at) by the author. Write the characteristic opposite the quote (these characteristics may be different than the ones listed for Tab 1). Then, find three more quotes in the text that indirectly tell you something about McCandless's character. Write the quote, page number, and characteristic on your T-chart.

Tab 3: Create a Venn diagram. On one side, write "Krakauer" and on the other, write "McCandless." Compare and contrast Krakauer's and McCandless' experiences, characteristics, and motivations (Hint: Re-read the end of Part II starting on page 5 with "In 1977...").

Tab 4:

Complete the above sentence starters to explain 7 different cause and effect relationships in "Death of an Innocent." Please do not use the same cause/effect combination for more than one sentence.

Tab 5: Do you think McCandless was an idiot or just an unlucky guy? Why? Write a body paragraph answering the question (Claim, evidence, and argument).
